HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - GARDEN DESIGN & INSTALLATION
The projects taken on by the Master Gardener program are driven by the needs of the staff and the interests of the volunteers. An example of the latter is the collaboration between Habitat for Humanity and the Master Gardeners. Once a house has been finished and the turf planted, Master Gardeners install foundation plants. A week before planting, the Bermuda grass in the beds is sprayed with Round Up. If the family is there at the time, they are asked if they have anything special in mind. That is taken into consideration where possible in creating the design. Plants are donated and the design may have to be modified based on the plants available. After the plants have been installed and labeled, a customized hand out is created for the homeowner listing the plants and providing care and pruning instructions. During the last 12 months 20 landscapes have been designed and installed.
