Warm season vegetables

Warm season vegetables are those which need both warm soil and air temperatures to germinate, grow and mature properly. Many have their origins in warmer climates such as South America. They generally have deep roots and have some drought resistance but will need irrigation. Unlike cool season vegetables which are grown for their foliage and roots, warm season crops are grown for their fruits.

Warm season vegetables are classified as either tender or very tender depending on their tolerance of the cold. Tender plants are injured or may be killed by a light frost but can withstand cool weather, while the very tender are injured by cool weather.

While warm season vegetables perform better in warm weather, extreme mid-summer heat may hinder production in some—such as tomatoes, peppers and beans. These plants become infertile and drop their blossoms with high temperatures, but will regain their fertility when it cools in the fall.

In addition, warm season crops generally need less nitrogen fertilizer than do the cool season vegetables. Excess nitrogen fertilizer in this group will cause blossoms to drop and halt fruit production.
