Each OSU Extension Master Gardener classroom presentation actively involves children and their teachers in a guided, hands-on, 45 minute horticultural learning experience right in their own classrooms. Information is offered in a variety of ways so all children can learn from the visit. Presentations are available for children in grades K through 5. Requests for the programs are taken on a first-come-first- served basis. We are in the process of reviewing our program content and identifying how it ties with the PAS Skills. The programs without PAS Skill notations have not yet been reviewed. To schedule the O.S.U. Master gardeners for your classroom, or for more information, call the Tulsa County Extension office at 746 3701.
The boys and girls learn to recognize a true "insect" by identifying its main body parts and learn the difference between insects and spiders. We teach them to regard stinging insects, the Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders with caution (but not automatically with destruction). Suitable for grades K-2.
The children learn about the diversity of the seed world through a classifying activity. With graphics and
soft sculpture models, children learn that all seeds have the same major parts in common. They can identify
the parts on their own "dissected" seed. They hear key words such as embryo, seed coat, cotyledon and
germination. Suitable for grades K-2 and 3-5. Pre-requisite for Something to Sprout About.

We introduce the students to beneficial insects most common in our area. Through a video, photographs and matching games, they will come to understand that not all insects in the landscape are pests. Good for grades 3-5.
The children will learn about soil as the basis for all live on earth, the difference between "soil" and "dirt"
and will hear such words as decomposition, organic matter, erosion and compost. Using a hand lens the
children will detect the evidence of both organic and inorganic materials in a soil sample. They will
conduct an experiment on the rate and volume of water that passes through different samples.

The class learns that seeds "sleep" or remain dormant until the right conditions happen to "wake" them or
trigger germination. Children learn the difference between a monocot and a dicot and sprout one of each.
Through the follow-up observations with their teachers, the students see what happens with their own
seeds. Suitable for K-2 and 3-5 with modification. Follows "Seedy Sideshow."

10 children will become a living teaching aid in introducing the main parts of the tree and their functions. The students will learn why trees are important to the environment and will be able to give examples of how trees are used. They will be taught how humans and trees are similar and different in their needs, examples that illustrate trees are alive and how to determine the age of a tree. Suitable for 3-4 grades.
A video and color photos aid in teaching an appreciation of butterflies and moths, how they are alike and
different and the role they play in the garden. They are not only pretty and fun to watch. They are also
important pollinators. Visual aids of sample flowers that attract both are used. Metamorphosis of both are
discussed.
Grades K-2 and 3-5, with modification.

The students learn about earthworms as "nature's plows." Basic worm anatomy is discussed, what they eat,
how they live and the characteristics that make these underestimated creatures so valuable to farmers and
gardeners. The children get up close and personal by observing LIVE worms from the Master Gardeners
portable worm farms.
